"Rowdy" Roddy Piper
Just a note I want to thank Colin Bowmen of WCW Magazine for the photo!
"Rowdy" Roddy Piper is one of the most recognized wrestlers today. In the 80's he was one of the top stars in WWF. The only wrestler that was a bigger star was Hulk Hogan.
Roddy has had a colorful and controversial wrestling career. In 1980 he was known nation wide in the US because of the promotions he did for Atlanta's WTBS station, he was let go because of his high maintenance behavior. In July 2000 He was fired from WCW because he filed an age discrimination lawsuit. In 2003 WWF fired him because of his negative attitude towards wrestling.
There have also been comments about his "Primadonna" attitude, when he is outside of the square circle. Despite all his behind the scenes problems he is still a fan favorite, maybe even more now than in his earlier years in wrestling.
Roddy's birth name is Roderick Toombs. He grew up in Canada. Not Scotland like many people believe. He does really play the bag pipes though. He started wrestling in Winnipeg, Canada in 1973.
Roddy is not what you would class a technical wrestler he is more of the punching and brawling type. But it wasn't his wrestling style that has made him a star it was his gift of gab. His interviews were such a hit that he got his own section of WWF TV called "Piper's Pit." He had his own segment until he retired in 1987. In 1992 he decided to make a come back.
Despite his wrestling style he still held several titles during his career. Some of them are NWA America's Champion, NWA America's Tag Champion (several times), NWA US Champion, NWA Northwest Tag Champion (4x), NWA Pacific Northeast Tag Champion (2x), Canadian Tag Champion, NWA Mid Atlantic TV Champion (2x), NWA US Champion (2x), NWA Mid Atlantic Champion, WWF Intercontinental Champion, and WCW US Champion.
